✨ Introducing Jesus

Summer 2018 – Brooklyn, New York
Tuesday 1st of August 2018. A hot summer’s day in New York. The theme of 24 Hours Worship that year was “I Am That I Am.”
I arrived in New York the day before on the 31st of July, my birthday. 0/10 experience I really don’t recommend.
The team had already been to Boston and Canada had spent all of Monday in the hot sun. My sister wanted me to experience the joy of exploring with our hosts rather than getting into the car of my good friend—the maths teacher with AC 🤣. She gave me her MetroCard, and off a few of us went to the subway.
🎳 First Stop: Bowling
whether you were playing the game or fellowshipping with our friends, we made the most of the afternoon.
Around 3:00pm, one of our hosts started rounding us up to go to church for the evening rehearsal and fellowship. We didn’t have to be at church until 5:30, so why the rush?
“We are getting on the F train, and if you don’t get on before 4, we will end up waiting on the bridge and no one will say anything…”
Ah Ahn, it can’t be that bad, I thought…
We got the first train, and everything was fine. As we approached the platform for the F train, we heard it pulling in. We all ran and jumped in. As the door closed, we realised we were missing one.
“He’ll be okay, he’s a local.” “He’ll meet us at church. He wanted to go the longer way. We’ll see who gets there first.”
🚇 Suspended in Mid-Air
We rode a few stops, then the train stopped. I looked out of the window we were suspended mid-air on a bridge.
Two minutes became four. Four minutes became six. The European lady sitting beside me sighed. I laughed. In true whatever fashion, we got into conversation.
She told me her name was Maddy. She was a hospital practitioner. Here’s how the conversation went:
Maddy: “This train always does this. Every day. No word of warning and no communication from the driver.”
Deb: “Omg, one of our hosts told us and we were rushing trying to avoid waiting. I didn’t think it would be this bad.”
Maddy: “Wait—you’re English?”
Deb: “The accent gave it away, right?”
We then had a very long conversation while still on the bridge—about Brexit, London, New York, and everything under the sun. Everything except why I was in New York.
In that moment, I had no idea how I would answer the question if she asked me. Should I mention church? What if she thinks I’m weird? Or just another Jehovah’s Witness only this time on a train rather than on a street corner?
I thought for ages: How do you introduce Jesus in this kind of situation?
💡 The Birth of a Mission
There and then, Introducing Jesus was born. The sweet voice of the Holy Spirit reminded me of the anchor scripture of my university fellowship (Fellowship of the UNASHAMED)
Romans 1:16
“I refuse to be ashamed of the wonderful message of God’s liberating power unleashed in us through Christ! For I am thrilled to preach that everyone who believes is saved—the Jew first, and then people everywhere!” — Romans 1:16 (TPT)
🕊️ What Is Introducing Jesus?
It’s not a program. Not a sermon series. It’s a mindset.
It’s about bringing Jesus into everyday conversations at bus stops, over coffee, during awkward train delays. It’s about normalising faith in real life, not just church life.
Introducing Jesus means living boldly, humbly, and honestly. It’s not about being perfect or having all the answers it’s about showing up with love, truth, and open hearts.
“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
— John 14:6 (TPT)
The gospel of Jesus Christ is not just for the people who look like us though it’s a good place to start. Introducing Jesus is about bringing Jesus into the everyday, normalising Christian life, and navigating what it’s like to be a Christian in all seasons.
I invite you to introduce Jesus in the everyday with me—in non-judgmental, honest, and open dialogue.
💬 So, How Do We Win Souls for Christ?
Not by shouting
Not by debating
And not by hiding!
We start by showing up. By being real. By listening. By speaking when the Spirit nudges us. And by remembering that every moment, even a delayed train is an opportunity to introduce Jesus, open your heart and mind and let I am do the rest.
Let’s do it together.
